Aching, tingling, stabbing, burning and throbbing - not all pain is the same. People experience pain in many different ways depending upon the cause of pain and the complex interactions of biological, psychological and cultural factors. Pain can vary in duration from a mere moment to weeks or months. Pain lasting more than six months can be called chronic pain. People suffering from either acute or chronic pain may find performing their daily activities challenging. For this reason it is important to have a plan so that life can be lived to its fullest.

The following are some suggestions to help people with pain live life as best as they can.

  • The first thing to do is be sure you get proper medical attention. Pain medicine doctors are specially trained to help diagnose the cause of your pain as well as treating the pain itself. Maintain regular contact with your physician and let him/her know how your treatment plan is working.
  • Follow your doctor's treatment plan. This may include physical therapy, medications or injection treatments.
  • Keep as active as possible. Discuss with your doctor how much activity is recommended. Lack of activity for prolonged periods of time can lead to muscle deterioration and even psychological depression, both of which can increase your pain. Put together an appropriate exercise plan.
  • Learn how to relax. Make sure you put this in your daily schedule. Describe how you will relax and for how long. Studies have shown that relaxation can reduce pain.
  • Find psychological support. This may include family and friends and/or counseling from a psychiatrist or psychologist. Isolating yourself can lead to depression and feelings of hopelessness and despair. The emotional and physical effects of pain can lead to sleep disruption and even personality changes. Support and counseling can help cope with the emotional effects of pain.
  • Develop healthy habits. This includes proper nutrition and weight management. If you are a smoker, quit smoking.
  • Having a well thought out plan will help cope with the physical and emotional strain that accompanies acute and chronic pain.
